Construction Jobs Grew in 33 States Year-Over-Year in March
The Associated General Contractors of America released its analysis of March 2026 federal employment data, showing construction jobs increased year-over-year in 33 states and D.C., with 31 states and D.C. also adding jobs month-over-month from February to March. The report draws on AGC construction industry data and tracks both annual and short-term employment trends across the country. The analysis does not break out trade-specific gains.
Broad employment growth looks like good news until you’re trying to staff a concrete pour in a hot market. When overall construction hiring climbs, subcontractor labor pools tighten before wages officially catch up, and the subs carrying the most backlog become the hardest to get a number from. Estimators in states showing strong month-over-month gains should be building their sub lists wider now, not at the bid invite stage. The coverage gap shows up later, but it opens today.
